I knew where I was going. This wasn’t just “a walk”. My feet followed the path like I’d done it a hundred times before, even though it had only been once.
Their cabin was just up ahead. I broke into a run, even though I didn’t want to. I hated how badly I needed this. It made me feel naked and afraid, like something was going to jump out from behind a tree and attack me.
The feeling didn’t stop me from racing up the steps. I remembered to knock before entering, but nobody came to the door. A part of me admitted that made sense. They were out having fun together. Ted was probably treating his sons to another hike or a row on one of the kayaks.
That made my stomach boil. I knocked again, more forcefully this time, and was surprised when a voice on the other side called out.
“Come in!” they said cheerily.
I figured it was one of the twins. They had an annoying way of being chipper in the face of everything. If they were in the cabin, Ted was probably there too.
“What the…?” I said, staring hard as soon as I was inside.
The twins were on the couch.
