“When did it all start?”

It was a fair question. Dad deserved that much. I struggled to lift my head. It felt like someone had replaced it with a bowling ball. I managed to sit up straight after a moment, though. From there, it was a matter of finding a place to focus my eyes. I stared at the couch behind where Dad stood, the small coffee table, and the open window to the side before settling on the floor.

It was reliable and constant, perfect for hiding my shame. “I…” I started to say. My voice gave out on the first try, though. “I…”

I paused again. My first thought was to tell Dad about the time in the stables. But then, I remembered watching Johan through the window. Before that, there was meeting the Bull for the first time, and going farther back, I had spotted him on the shore of the lake.

Everything came together like links in a chain to form a line, almost as if it had been planned.

“I heard about him from some of the other campers,” I began, finding my voice at last. “They were talking about him. Like he was some kind of local legend or something.”

Dad nodded, or at least, I think he did. “Go on,” he said, his voice strained, but surprisingly patient.

“I saw him once around camp,” I continued, willing myself to keep talking through my embarrassment. “Not up close. Not then. It was from afar.”

“Then you met him in the stables?” Dad pressed.

I considered explaining everything to Dad. A part of me wanted to lie, though. It seemed like the smart decision. I could spare myself some of the interrogation and Dad’s feelings all at the same time.

“Yeah,” I admitted. “He works there, tending the horses.”

Dad knew that part already. The important part of lying was to start off telling the truth. I could make it out like the Bull and I weren’t quite as close as it seemed. Of course, there was the question of how much distance there could be between two people after a threesome in a hot tub.

“I saw…” It felt unfair to drag Johan into this, but I persisted after a minute of indecisiveness. “Johan and the…and he…they were…together.”
